Genetic Engineering of Male Sterility for Hybrid Seed Production

چکیده

In order to prevent self-pollination in some plants like corn, tomato and cabbage, emasculation of the female line by hand is required, raising costs and labor expenses of seed production. The utilization of naturally occurring cytoplasmatic male-sterility (cms) is a more efficient approach. Mostly correlated with changes in the mitochodrial or chloroplast DNA, in some lines of distinct species like maize, oilseed rape, rice and Beta beets the anthers do not develop viable pollen, consequently the flowers only contain fertile female reproductive organs making cross-pollination obligate.

Transgenic Male Sterlity For Hybrid Seed Production In Vegetables -A Review

The development of strategies to improve crop plants by the production of hybrid varieties is a major goal in plant breeding. Hybrid progeny often have a higher yield, increased resistance to disease, and an enhanced performance in different environment compared with the parental lines. Availability of cost effective mechanism/ method to produce large scale hybrid seed utilizing selected parent...

Molecular Mapping of D₁, D₂ and ms5 Revealed Linkage between the Cotyledon Color Locus D₂ and the Male-Sterile Locus ms5 in Soybean.

In soybean, genic male sterility can be utilized as a tool to develop hybrid seed. Several male-sterile, female-fertile mutants have been identified in soybean. The male-sterile, female-fertile ms5 mutant was selected after fast neutron irradiation. Male-sterility due to ms5 was associated with the "stay-green" cotyledon color mutation. The cotyledon color trait in soybean is controlled by two ...

A further evaluation of hybrid wheat

The development of F1 hybrid varieties of wheat is reviewed under four main headings: male sterility, hybrid seed production, the performance of hybrids and commercial aspects. The three systems for male sterility used in wheat (cytoplasmic male sterility, nuciear male sterility and chemical hybridizing agents) are described and it is noted that no system is without problems or has a clear adva...

Gene, protein, and network of male sterility in rice

Rice is one of the most important model crop plants whose heterosis has been well-exploited in commercial hybrid seed production via a variety of types of male-sterile lines. Hybrid rice cultivation area is steadily expanding around the world, especially in Southern Asia. Characterization of genes and proteins related to male sterility aims to understand how and why the male sterility occurs, a...
